Navigating Processed Foods by Understanding Ingredients

As we begin to realize that food companies and restaurants use harmful chemicals in our foods, we might feel mad, sad, or confused. These emotions are natural because we expect agencies to prioritize our health. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. The United States allows over 10,000 chemicals in our foods, whereas Europe permits only 400. Furthermore, companies can test their own products and apply to the FDA under the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) program. However, this does not actually guarantee safety. Understanding Ingredients is the key to our health.

Understanding Ingredients

Here are a few tips to empower you to make informed choices:

USDA Certified Organic

When a product has the USDA Certified Organic label, it means:
No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers were used.
No genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are present.
No artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors are allowed.
No antibiotics or growth hormones (for animal products).
Animals are raised humanely, with access to pasture (for meat, dairy, eggs).
Soil health is prioritized, promoting regenerative farming practices.

However, organic does not always mean healthy—organic junk food still exists! Always check ingredients.

Non-GMO Project Verified

This label means the product has been tested and confirmed to be free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
No genetically engineered ingredients, like GMO corn, soy, or canola.
Third-party verification, meaning it’s not just the company claiming it’s non-GMO.
Does NOT mean organic—pesticides and synthetic chemicals can still be used.

For the cleanest choice, look for BOTH the USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified labels when possible!

Understanding Ingredients to Avoid & Why

  1. Synthetic Food Dyes (Red 40, Red 3 Yellow 5, Blue 1, etc.) Petroleum-based chemicals are made from crude oil. They go through a chemical process to create bright, stable colors that are used in processed foods, drinks, and even personal care products. Studies have linked these dyes to hyperactivity in children, allergies, and even potential carcinogenic effects. As a result, many European countries have banned them or require warning labels. Meanwhile, the U.S. still permits them in our foods.
  2. Natural Flavors sounds harmless, but “natural flavors” is actually a catch-all for hundreds of chemicals, solvents, and additives. Many of these contain MSG-like compounds that may trigger headaches, allergic reactions, and nervous system issues.
  3. BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant to extend shelf life. However, research suggests it may disrupt hormones and cause liver toxicity. In addition, some studies classify it as a potential carcinogen.
  4. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) is in some sodas and sports drinks. It includes bromine, a chemical that accumulates in the body and disrupts thyroid function. Consequently, it can also cause neurological issues and skin irritation. Many countries have banned BVO, yet the U.S. still allows it in certain products.
  5. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is a cheap sweetener that contributes to obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, and chronic inflammation. Additionally, it raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
  6. Hydrogenated Oils (Partially Hydrogenated Oils/Trans Fats) are oils used to extend shelf life, but they significantly increase the risk of heart disease, inflammation, and obesity. Although the U.S. has partially banned them, some processed foods still contain small amounts.
  7. Seed Oils (Canola, Soybean, Corn, Sunflower, Safflower, etc.) These highly processed oils are present in many foods. They promote inflammation, insulin resistance, and an unhealthy balance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids.
  8. Benzidine A known carcinogen used in some food dyes, benzidine has been linked to bladder cancer and other serious health risks. Even in small amounts, it is considered unsafe.
  9. Sugar (Refined White Sugar, Cane Sugar, Dextrose, etc.) Consuming excessive sugar leads to metabolic disorders, insulin resistance, obesity, and an increased risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Moreover, it fuels harmful gut bacteria, negatively impacting digestive health.
  10. Polysorbate 80 Many processed foods, ice creams, and even vaccines contain this synthetic emulsifier. Research indicates that it disrupts gut microbiome balance, increases intestinal permeability (leaky gut), and contributes to inflammation and metabolic disorders.

Final Thoughts on Understanding Ingredients

Clearly, understanding food labels and ingredient lists plays a crucial role in protecting your health. While making these changes may seem overwhelming at first, remember the 1% Shift Method. Swap one product at a time. Prioritize whole, real foods whenever possible, and remember that every small shift adds up to a healthier future!

As Florida and other states continue to create and pass bills to ban and demand labels for not just synthetic food dyes but additional additives, it is important to have as many voices behind this initiative.
