It’s Not Just the Gluten: Why Glyphosate Deserves a Spot on Your Radar

Ever wonder why gluten sensitivity has become so common in recent years?

You’re not alone. I used to chalk up my daughter’s skin reactions—little bumps that showed up after eating gluten—as just another food sensitivity. But deep down, something didn’t sit right. So I went on a mission (like mamas do), and what I uncovered absolutely rocked me.

It wasn’t just about the gluten—it was about what’s being sprayed on the gluten.

So… what is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, a weedkiller developed by Monsanto (now Bayer). It’s used on genetically modified crops and on many non-GMO conventional crops—especially grains like wheat, oats, barley, and legumes. But here’s what many people don’t know: glyphosate is also commonly used as a desiccant, a drying agent sprayed just before harvest to speed up the process.

That means the grain is harvested with glyphosate residue on it.
Then it gets milled into flour… and baked into the crackers, bread, cereal, and snacks that end up in our pantries.

The Health Impact is Real

The World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen” in 2015. And while corporations fight to protect it, courts have already awarded over $10 billion in lawsuits linking glyphosate to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

But the damage doesn’t stop at cancer.

🧠 Studies show glyphosate may:

  • Disrupt the gut microbiome, leading to leaky gut and autoimmune issues
  • Interfere with hormone and liver function
  • Impact fertility
  • Contribute to chronic inflammation
  • Affect mood, behavior, and cognitive development in children

👉 This 2021 study explains how glyphosate interferes with the shikimate pathway in our gut bacteria, leading to immune system imbalance.

A Farmer’s Perspective

Regenerative farmers are now speaking out. They’ve seen the damage to the soil, the plants, and even their own health. As Kelly Ryerson shared on my podcast, many conventional farmers feel trapped in a system that rewards quick harvests over soil health, and subsidies over sustainability. The ripple effects are showing up in our food, our bodies, and our kids.

“We’ve changed the way we farm, and now we’re seeing the impact on our health. But there’s another way forward—through regenerative agriculture and policy change.” – Kelly Ryerson, Glyphosate Girl

What Are We Feeding Our Kids?

Zen Honeycutt of Moms Across America recently commissioned a new study on breakfast cereals and found alarmingly high levels of glyphosate residue in popular brands—yes, even those labeled as “healthy.”

These were products marketed to children.
These are the cereals lining school cafeteria trays and breakfast tables every morning.

📊 Results showed levels well above what independent scientists consider safe, especially for developing brains and guts.

So What Can We Do, Mama?

We can’t control everything—but we can start making 1% shifts that add up big.

🌿 Steps You Can Take Today:

  1. Prioritize organic or regenerative grains – Especially wheat, oats, legumes, and corn. (know your brands)
  2. Read ingredient labels – Be cautious of cereals, granola bars, and crackers with processed grains. (look for glyphosate free labels)
  3. Shop local when you can – Support farmers using sustainable, low-to-no chemical methods. (get to know your farmer)
  4. Wash your produce thoroughly – While it doesn’t remove all pesticides, it helps.
  5. Use your voice – Email your school board, petition for cleaner food, and share your story.
  6. Educate your kids gently – So they grow up empowered, not afraid.
  7. Support organizations like Moms Across America – They’re making noise where it counts.

You’re Not Alone in This.

When I learned that it wasn’t just gluten we were reacting to—but the chemicals sprayed on it—it changed the way I looked at food. It lit a fire in me. One I’m still carrying today as I speak up, share resources, and encourage mamas just like you.

This isn’t about fear—it’s about awareness and empowerment. You get to choose better for your family, one shift at a time. Grab a free resource to make these shifts even easier.

And I’m here walking beside you. 💛

With love + wellness,
Robin
